Immerse yourself in the rich history and dynamic performances of The Living Theatre, America’s oldest experimental theatre company, with the documentary “The Living Theatre: Poetry, Politics, and Protest” by Alex Goldblum. This film offers an in-depth look at the groundbreaking work of Judith Malina and Julian Beck, the Beat generation poets, stage and screen actors, and theatre directors who founded the company over sixty years ago.
Through rare footage and intimate interviews, this documentary explores the ensemble’s powerful and provocative productions, including Anne Waldman’s espionage-laden “Red Noir” and the biblical examination of Moses and Korah in “Korach.” The Living Theatre has continually pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre, blending poetry, politics, and protest to create a unique and impactful experience.
Accompanying the documentary is the book “The Living Theatre: A Photographic Retrospective” by Alex Goldblum. This visual companion is the culmination of over three years of collaboration with more than fifty members of The Living Theatre ensemble, including significant contributions from Judith Malina, Brad Burgess, and other ensemble members. The book features photographs by Alex Goldblum, Chantelle Lucier, Kennedy Yanko, and Erika Kreisman, capturing the essence of the company’s innovative work.
